Installation Permit

Sometimes your operations fall outside of the realm of a Stand Rules or Bespoke environmental permit, when this happens an installation permit may be required.

Also known as an industrial environmental permit or Industrial emissions permit. At The Permitting Company, we can quickly assess your operations and confirm if an Installation Permit is necessary.

An installation permit is required for operations defined as ‘regulated facilities’ under Schedule 1 of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016.

Schedule 1 outlines activities involving the use of substances, energy, or materials that have the potential to cause significant pollution. These typically include industrial processes, manufacturing, chemical processes and waste treatment activities.

Examples of these could be:

Treatment or recovery of waste such as thermal or chemical processing

Manufacturing of chemical, metals and materials

Storage of hazardous waste, storing over 10 tonnes at any one time

Activates involving solvents, paints and coatings

Intensive farming operations (over the threshold in Section 6.9)

Industrial combustion and power generation

Our Process: Efficient. Thorough. Site-Specific.

Our services encompass the entire process, from suitability screening and pre-applications negotiations, to assessment, application preparation, and management through the determination stages.

Best Available Technique (BAT)

As your operation will be permitted as an installation, under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) Best Available Techniques (BAT) will apply.

BAT refers to the most effective techniques for preventing or minimising emissions and impacts on the environment, technically and economically viable for an operator. It includes technologies, operational methods, and management practices that set the environmental performance standard for regulated industries.

BAT conclusions are documented within BREF documents relevant to your sector or operation, in the absence of a formal BREF documents for your operation or industrial sector, the regulator will refer to sector guidance notes to ensure best practise is implemented.

Relevant BREF documents

Waste Treatment BREF 2018, covers mechanical and physico-chemical treatment

Non-Ferrous Metals BREF 2017, Covers non-ferrous metal recovery

A BAT assessment should be carried out at the planning stage to ensure that site infrastructure and operations are complaint with relevant BREF documents and BAT conclusions.

The application will include but is not limited to, site plans, site conditions reports, technical information and management systems, environmental and BAT risk assessments and non-technical summaries. For Installation Environmental Permits, the EA conducts detailed technical assessments, reviewing the applicant’s risk management measures, monitoring plans, and adherence to Best Available Techniques (BAT). Installation permits also require public consultation as a part of the application process.
