Scrap Metal Permit

Helping UK Metal Recyclers get Permitted

We prepare and manage environmental permits for scrap metal operations handling nonferrous metals and ferrous metals. From startups to multisite operators, we’ll build a compliant application and guide you through to determination.

Who needs a scrap metal environmental permit?

If you process, store, or treat waste metals such as sorting, shearing, baling, compacting, granulating, or cutting with handheld equipment then it is likely you will need an environmental permit. We can help determine whether a Standard Rules Permit fits your operation or if a Bespoke Permit is required. With the right permissions in place, you can legally expand the range of metal types you accept and trade with dealers and brokers.

What is a scrap metal permit?

A Scrap Metal Environmental Permit is a legal authorisation issued by the environment agency that allows you to store, process, and treat ferrous and non-ferrous metals at your site. It sets out the rules you must follow to protect the environment, covering how metals are handled, stored, and processed to prevent pollution, fire, and nuisance to neighbours. Without a permit, operating a scrap yard or metal recycling site is unlawful, and you risk enforcement action or prosecution.

One of the most common permits for metal recycling sites is Standard Rules Permit SR2015 No 16 – Metal Recycling Site. This permit allows the sorting, separation, grading, shearing, baling, compacting, and cutting (with hand-held tools) of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals for recovery. It typically applies to sites handling up to 25,000 tonnes per year, with conditions on storage, emissions, and pollution prevention. SR2015 No 16 is designed for straightforward scrap metal operations, offering a faster and more cost-effective route to compliance than a bespoke application – SR2015 No 16: metal recycling site – GOV.UK

Benefits of compliance

Securing a scrap metal environmental permit not only keeps your site compliant with the law but also opens the door to wider business opportunities. With a permit in place, you can legally process, store, and trade both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, giving you the confidence to work with licensed dealers and brokers. Importantly, compliance also enables you to meet the strict requirements for exporting metal wastes overseas, ensuring you can access international markets without the risk of enforcement action. A permit demonstrates professionalism, protects your reputation, and gives your customers and partners assurance that your operations meet the highest environmental standards.
